Taranaki’s stunning landscape, shaped by Mt Taranaki, also influences how and where homes are built. The region is mostly covered in volcanic soils, which are usually strong and stable — ideal for supporting transportable homes. Around New Plymouth, for example, firm volcanic ash and rock provide excellent ground for building.
However, like many regions, there are some areas where the ground can be softer, such as old swamp land, riverbanks, or coastal plains. On hillside sites, the volcanic ash can become slippery after heavy rain, making slope stability an important consideration.
That’s where our experience comes in. We use practical foundation solutions, most often timber or engineered pile foundations, which allow us to reach firm ground even if the topsoil isn’t as stable. This approach is cost-effective, reliable, and well-suited to Taranaki’s varied conditions.
A major factor in Taranaki is the frequent strong winds. Many sites are rated very high or extra high wind zones, meaning homes need extra bracing, durable materials, and reinforced fixings.
